Vincent Gan

Assistant Professor

National University of Singapore

The Robotics and Artificial Intelligence for Built Environment (RAIS4BE) Lab is overseen by Dr Vincent Gan. Dr Gan is currently an Assistant Professor at National University of Singapore and he serves as the Deputy Director of the Centre for (5G) Digital Building Technology. He was previously a Research Assistant Professor at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Visiting Lecturer at Imperial College London, Guest Lecturer at University College London, Visiting Scholar at Purdue University. Dr Gan completed his MSc and PhD in Civil Engineering under the supervision of Chair Professor Irene Lo (Academician of European Academy of Sciences and Arts) and Professor Jack Cheng (Assoc Head of CEE, HKUST).

Dr Gan’s research focuses on automation and digitalisation in the built environment. He works in building robotics and AI technologies by integrating ground robots with LiDAR and image-based sensing to enable high-precision reality capture and automated 3D modelling of buildings and infrastructures. He also works in computational modelling and design, focusing on linking BIM and AI with building structural optimisation. He has authored in 80+ academic papers in leading civil engineering journals such as Applied Energy, Computer-Aided Civil and Infrastructure Engineering, Automation in Construction, Advanced Engineering Informatics, and Building and Environment, as well as in major conferences like the International Symposium on Automation and Robotics in Construction and the International Conference on Computing in Civil Engineering. His work has been cited over 4,000 times on Google Scholar, with one highly cited paper in ESI. He was listed among the Top 2% Scientists Worldwide by Stanford University/Elsevier in 2022 and 2023. He has filled 1 provisional patent, and 4 technology and invention disclosures related to robotic scanning and scan2BIM. He has received several awards, including Structural Excellence Award by HKIE and OpenBIM/OpenGIS Grand Award by buildingSmart (HK). Dr Gan is dedicated to developing innovative pedagogy for teaching digital building technologies and has been recognised with College Teaching Excellence Award at NUS.
